Featured Fit Friends Friday: Marisol from A Dirty Martini Kind of Girl

It’s another Friday already?!? Can’t say I’m not happy about that! And it’s a lovely 3 day weekend with the Labor Day holiday! I am even triple-excited now because it’s also the second installment of my new weekly series, Featured Fit Friends Friday! I’ve been chatting it up with “MissMarisol” on Twitter for quite a while now, talking about Weight Watchers, fitness, food, and even my dates and the Ninja blender (that I clearly must purchase!). Her awesome attitude and friendliness makes her someone you definitely need to get to know! So read on!

Name: Marisol
Blog: A Dirty Martini Kind of Girl
From: I was born in Mexico City but moved to California 23 years ago.  I live in the Bay Area, and I love it.

Why did you start blogging? What is the goal/purpose of your blog?
I started blogging just to have a place on the internet to call my own. It was mostly a random collection of things that interested me and an online journal where I chronicled my life. While I still post random things every now and then, my blog is mostly focused now on my weight loss journey which I started, and have stuck to, since September of 2010. I don’t consider myself the greatest writer, but I’ve enjoyed blogging my journey, and the support I’ve gotten from strangers is amazing. Some of those strangers have become friends in real life.

When not blogging, what do you do?
Right now I am unemployed, so besides looking for employment, I spend a lot of my day reading healthy living and beauty blogs, which are two things that interest me. I also work out. I like going wine tasting as well, although my tolerance level isn’t the same as it used to be.

Are you attending (have you attended) any blogger conferences?
I attended a local Fitbloggin’ meetup, and based on the connections I made there, I’ve been able to meet with other bloggers in my area.

Have you met up in person with anyone you’ve met through your blog or other social media?
Oh yes! Twitter, Tumblr, and my blog have enabled me in making friendships with people with similar interests.

What things have you learned from blogging that you would like to share with other bloggers?
The importance of being yourself is something I’ve learned from blogging. I like to read about people’s real stories and struggles. Life isn’t perfect, and there are those who blog to make it seem like their life is fabulous when in reality they might be struggling. Whether you have one reader or a thousand of them, people take the time to visit your blog and read it. They are there because they find something in common with you so just be you.

What is your favorite fitness activity?
I really like Zumba, although I lack any grace when trying to dance, but I have fun doing it, and that’s what’s important. I recently started Couch to 5K, and although I am struggling with it, I am enjoying it because I never thought I would be someone who would ever jog and perhaps one day run.

Have you always been an active person, or is health/fitness something you found later in life?
I’ve been overweight all of my life. It’s been a struggle since I was a child, and it got worse as I got older. I tried many, many times to diet, and it didn’t stick. But this time it has, and I am motivated because I am seeing myself in a different way. I used to swim when I was a child and that’s something that I can try again. Although I started losing weight in September 2010, it wasn’t until August 2011 where I made an effort to be active and realized the importance of exercise. I went to a Do Life Meet Up, and met Ben from Ben Does Life. He has inspired me and thousands of others to do life.

What’s your favorite fitness gear?
I love my Polar HRM FT4. I got in in June, but I don’t work out without it. My Brooks tennis shoes rock. Getting fitted for shoes is a must for walking/running.

Do you struggle with your weight?
Oh yes! I definitely have and continue to struggle with my weight. I’ve lost 107 pounds so far and have a lot more to lose. But it doesn’t seem as daunting anymore. I know it will take time, but I also know that I will do it.

What is your eating philosophy?
I lost my first 100 pounds with Weight Watchers. I think it’s a great program, but at this point in time, I need something else. I still use a lot of what I learned from WW, but right now I am focusing on counting calories and eating clean. I heard a lot about eating clean, and at first I didn’t really understand it. I did more research and even bought a book (Tosca Reno’s Recharged Eat Clean Diet book) and it made sense. I try to eat clean at least 90% of the time, but most weeks its closer to 75%. It’s still an improvement over all the processed food I used to eat, and I have more energy when eating clean. The cleaner I eat, the better I feel.

Favorite blogs in general?
I have so many healthy living blogs that I follow that are my favorites, but the ones that I feel have made a difference in my weight loss journey are Ben Does Life, Mary from A Small Loss, Tim from Fat. Boy. Thin., and Emily from Big Life, Little Blog. I also love the beauty industry, and the one blog that I always read to get my beauty news from is Makeup and Beauty Blog. Karen has become a real life friend and enables some of my make up purchases.

Do you use any smart phone apps that you find helpful?
Some of my favorite apps are RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal, Fitocracy, Kitchen Dial, and Songza.
