So, as you may or may not know, my weight has been puttering around my 5% milestone (that’s Weight Watchers speak for having lost 5% of my body weight) since I hit it on July 20th. Yep, that’s almost FIVE months I have been half-assing this whole getting healthy thing! Eww!
So, after having a rough go of November, when I finally managed to hit another 5 lbs lost milestone and immediately gained 4 lbs back after a visit from my parents involving lots of reckless eating and rounding out the month by using Thanksgiving as a 4-day excuse to eat whatever I wanted, and then starting off December with a weekend out of town that included lots of wine, pasta, empanadas, and one too many krispy kremes, I decided that I would NOT let the fact that it’s “the holidays” be an excuse to continue to be the excuse to allow me to eat whatever I wanted for another entire month!
Yep, there actually is a lot of temptation around the holidays with parties and people bringing cookies to work, etc, and yep, I get sad that I am still single (as the holidays always have a way of making you realize how lonely you are) and that I am still fat, but I thought to myself, if I really do let myself slack this month, as I clearly have for the past 4 and 1/2 months, well then, won’t I be perpetuating my sadness?!? Si.
So when I returned home from Charlotte last Monday, I promised myself that when weigh-in day rolled around on Wednesday, I was going to get back to tracking my food! Ok, so I should have probably started right then and there, but I wanted a clean slate… a whole week of 49 weekly PointsPlus and the momentum that I hoped would follow the inevitable bad numbers on the scale. Amazingly, I only had a 0.6 lb gain! I did manage to eat a few lower calorie meals over the weekend to try to make up for the reckless eating, and I guess it paid off, but I know I could have done better. Especially since I didn’t track a thing! Regardless, that 4 lb gain from November was still there, and that was momentum enough to get me going!
I also decided that I was going to make an effort to get back to tweeting and blogging, 1) because I miss it, and 2) to keep me honest and find the support I used to have out there in cyberspace!
Another one of the things I decided to do was to turn my “week” in my Weight Watchers Online Plan back to week 1 and actually re-read and do all the suggested activities, especially since they rolled out the 2012 PointsPlus changes. A refresher was exactly what I needed! Of course, I know most of it, but given my track record the past few months, maybe there is something I missed or forgot! And as part of 2012 PointsPlus, they changed the website and you can check off each activity they ask you to do and it says, “done!” I love checking off lists! What a great sense of accomplishment!
And of course I tweeted about it, and I got exactly what I needed. One of my newest twitter friends, @NewVeronica2011, responded “good idea to switch back on website! Need to do that #back2basics.” Ahhhh…. #back2basics …. what is this all about, I thought? I got the 411 from good ol’ Veronica, who introduced me to @tryn2bfit (a.k.a. Colleen at Bee Fit), whose own need to get back to basics inspired this little challenge. (or shall I say big challenge?!?)
The basic idea is to work on whatever it is that you think is keeping you off track and make it a priority to stay on track the entire month of December, instead of using this month as an excuse! All you have to do is let Colleen know in a blog comment (Bee Fit), twitter (@tryn2bfit), or facebook that you are in, and then check in once in awhile to let the everyone know how it’s going!
Encouragement and statuses on twitter will use the hash tag #back2basics. (Although, there are some random tweets that pop up that I doubt are participating in the challenge, i.e. “Its easier for half smart ppl to think the requirement to freedom is standing on one leg for an hour. #back2basics” …hmmmm)
So at the end of the month, we will hopefully have some success to be proud of! Plus, sweet Colleen is gonna pick a winner who will get a special gift! (awww!!!) Moreover, this challenge just helps me feel NOT ALONE! There are a ton of other people out there working hard this month too! Yeah us!
So, as far as I see, there are no steadfast rules to how or what to do for this challenge except to get back to basics and stay on track! I think some goals for the month are in order. I don’t even think it has to be something that you do every day. Just make it work for your success! Here are my goals, that I will take one week, and sometimes one day or even minute, at a time! I am going to:
- Track my food and healthy checks (even if I screw up).
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator at work.
- Start tracking my measurements.
- Tweet what I eat (when I can).
- Visualize my “skinny self” in moments of potential weakness.
- Not be perfect (because that is impossible).
- Not let my imperfectness lead to just giving up all together.
- Forgive myself if I mess up and start over ASAP.
What are your Back 2 Basics goals?
